A motte and bailey castle was the first type of castle in the UK is was made up of two parts the motte and the bailey.  The motte was  raised with a wooden keep or  tower on top were the Lord lived.  The bailey was for soldiers and other people to live in it was enclosed by a fence and protected by a ditch.  The castle was made from wood, this meant that it was easy and quicker to make because they would just cut down the nearby trees then build it from the wood they had chopped.
